The Battery Passport for Resilient Supply Chain and Implementation of Circular Economy (BASE) Project marked a significant milestone with its 2nd General Assembly, held on February 12-13 at the Hyatt Regency, Manchester, hosted by Technovative Solutions Limited (TVS). Bringing together key consortium partners, the event focused on advancing the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) initiative—a crucial step toward a more transparent, sustainable, and circular battery supply chain.
The General Assembly of the Battery Passport for Resilient Supply Chain and Implementation of Circular Economy (BASE) Project was attended by all the consortium members including representatives from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Technovative Solutions Ltd., Beeplanet Factory SL, Adscensus MB, Parakeet BV, INND Batteries BV, Ford Otomotiv Sanayi A.S., Artech International, Corvus Energy AS, Mercedes-Benz Türk A.S., Seraph Consulting Limited, Rok Metals Sarl, Aspilsan Enerji Sanayi Ve Ticaret A.S., Navtek Deniz Teknolojisi A.S., European Lithium Institute (eLi), Exitcom Recycling A.S., Fondation pour l’Institut des Hautes Études Internationales et du Développement (IHEID), SQM SA, and University of Surrey.
“All partners were actively engaged in the workshops and presentations, contributing valuable insights. They have proposed numerous recommendations essential for the effective implementation of solutions. Additionally, BASE consortium is planning to put forward several suggestions and recommendations to the European Commission to enhance the clarity of the battery regulation.”, said Farhadur Arifin (Technovative Solutions Limited), Technical Manager, BASE Project, on partners’ active participation in the recent General Assembly and the overall project.
The General Assembly featured in-depth discussions on the project’s progress, including updates on functional and non-functional requirements of the Digital Battery Passport (DBP), reference architecture and ontology development, circularity aspects and methodologies for tracking battery lifecycle, use case presentations demonstrating the practical application of the DBP system, BASE’s long-term vision and strategic roadmap for sustainability, project management and risk assessment, and dissemination and communication.
“A frozen, optimised BASE platform and architecture design along with finalised BASE system specifications and KPIs are the major milestones in this time-frame.”- mentioned Farhadur Arifin, about the project progress.
The consortium collaborated on nine work packages to support the European DPP initiative, focusing on transparency and sustainability. The BASE project aims to redefine battery perception, production, and usage. Use cases include automotive (E-bus EV platform production for MARCEDES-BENZ and frugal EV platform production for FORD Motors), marine (electric tugboat production), and stationary (2nd-life electric energy storage production pilot).
The BASE project aims to develop and implement a Digital Battery Passport (DBP) service, as mandated by EU Regulation, to ensure transparent, secure, and cost-efficient platform operation. The project will develop transparent methodologies for battery performance and ESGE indicators, ensuring traceability at the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) level and promoting data interoperability. The DBP will provide accurate battery performance data, increasing battery service life and recycling efficiency, reducing waste and EU dependency on third countries.
